Start Menu

That Start Menu is always the fastest and easiest tool in the Windows interface to navigate to your favorite programs, update and access your profile, and to access system settings. In Windows 10, you can now customize the Start Menu to fit your life and work style from its color to quick access to your most used apps and places. Here’s how to make the Start Menu work for you on the Surface Laptop.

Customize Start menu settings

  1. From Settings Click the Start menu .

  1. Click Settings then Personalization.

  1. Then click Start and use the sliders to toggle on or off options for the Start menu

Resize the Start Menu window

  1. Simply use your mouse to drag the Start menu edges either horizontally or vertically.

Resize the Start Menu tiles

  1. Simply right click the tile you’d like to resize.

  1. Click the Resize menu and select from small, medium, wide, or large options.

Pin and Unpin Tiles

  1. You can easily pin and unpin tiles by right-clicking on each one and selecting “Unpin from Start.”

  1. To pin an app from the list as a tile, locate it in the list of apps and choose “Pin to Start.”

Turn Off Live Tile Updates

Some of the tiles give you live updates from news and weather to gaming updates, but they do flash and can be distracting. To turn them off:
  1. Simply right click the tile you’d like to turn off live updates from.

  1. Click the More menu and select “Turn live tile off.”

Group Tiles into Folders

Have your phone apps organized into categories for fitness, entertainment and work? Windows 10 tiles function similarly. To create a folder:
  1. Drag a tile you’d like to group and drop it on another tile you’d like to group it with.

  1. Click the folder to expand it.
  2. Click any tile inside the folder to launch the app.
  3. To collapse the folder, click the arrow above it.

Change the Start Menu (and Taskbar) Color

  1. Select Start , select Settings , then click Personalization or open settings from Start menu or use the keyboard shortcut, Windows key + I.

  1. From the left menu select “Colors.” Use your finger the Pen or a mouse to select your favorite colors for start and windows menus or set dark and light color schemes.
  1. Scroll to the “More Options” section and check either “Start, taskbar, and action center” (this is for your Start menu, taskbar, app icons, and actions center) or “Title bars.” (this is for your active window).

Use Full Screen Start Menu

  1. From Settings Click the Start menu .

  1. Click Settings then Personalization.

  1. Then click Start and use the sliders to toggle on or off options for the Start menu, choose Use Start full screen to toggle between normal and full screen mode.

Remove Suggested Apps from your App List

  1. From Settings Click the Start menu .

  1. Click Settings then Personalization.

  1. Then click Start and use the sliders to toggle on or off options for the Start menu, choose Occasionally show suggestions in Start to toggle between modes.
